The Women’s Movement Towards Freedom was founded in March 2023 by human rights and women’s rights advocates to defend Afghan women against systematic discrimination under Taliban rule, with a focus on their legal and rightful protections.

This movement operates in various countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Canada, continuing its humanitarian work and advocacy across the globe to support women’s rights.

Tahera Nasiri

Thera Nasiri an Afghan human rights activist and defender of women's rights, has been a vocal figure in the protests against the Taliban's oppressive policies. A former member of the Afghan Women's Network and a Kabul University student, she has continued her activism in exile in Canada. In 2023, she founded the "Women's Movement towards Freedom," leading efforts to fight for women's and minorities' rights in Afghanistan. See more....

Hamida Lesani

Hamida Lissani, after losing her parents as a child in Iran, was married at 14 but pursued her passion for education despite early challenges. Returning to Afghanistan post-Bonn Conference, she studied journalism, earned a master’s in political science, and worked as a journalist. She founded the Empowered Women Organization in 2016 to advocate for women’s rights and faced multiple death threats yet persisted. After Kabul's fall, she co-founded the Women Towards Freedom Movement to continue this advocacy against the Taliban. Now in Germany, she remains an active human rights defender with the ifa Institute. See more....

Fatimah Karimi

Fatimah Karimi, born in 1999 in Ghazni’s Malistan district, completed her primary education in 2017 and studied journalism at Ebni-e-Sina University. Since 2018, she has actively advocated for women’s and minorities’ rights. Despite rising restrictions under the Taliban, she joined the Women Towards Freedom movement in 2022 to continue her human rights efforts. This movement aims to combat injustice and promote equality for women, girls, and minorities. She remains committed to her social and justice-oriented activities under this organization. Umulbanin Khavary

Umulbanin Khavary, born in 1991 in Bamyan, Afghanistan, is a dedicated women’s rights advocate and educator. After completing her studies at Kabul University, she taught at Marefat High School and Omran Asak Teacher Training College, focusing on empowering Afghan women. She joined the NIMA Institute in 2019 as an English instructor and later pursued a master’s in Gender and Women’s Studies. In 2020, she established the Mahdia Handicraft Workshop, creating jobs for over fifty Afghan women. Following the Taliban takeover, she continued her human rights advocacy, standing as a resilient voice for Afghan women and girls. See more....

Benazir Mohammadi

Benazir Mohammadi, an Afghan computer science student in Iran, has been actively advocating for Afghan women's rights since the Taliban’s return to power, which has severely restricted women's freedoms. Despite the challenges of migration, she has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of Afghan women's struggles and rights, from Kabul to Tehran. Her efforts aim to represent the frustrations and needs of Afghan women, including those in exile. Benazir remains committed to advocating for justice and fundamental human rights for Afghan women, both within Afghanistan and abroad. See more....
