Statement of the “Women’s Movement towards Freedom” On the Occasion of January 24, International Day of Education

Education is a fundamental, universal, and inalienable human right and serves as the foundation of freedom, equality, social justice, and sustainable development.
No political, ideological, or governing authority has the right to deprive anyone of this right. International Day of Education is an opportunity to reaffirm this fundamental truth: denying access to education particularly to women and girls is a clear violation of human rights and a crime against the future of an entire nation.
We, the members of the Women’s Movement towards Freedom, mark this day at a time when millions of girls and women in Afghanistan have been systematically and deliberately deprived of their right to education. This deprivation threatens not only their individual lives and futures, but also the social, cultural, and economic future of the country.
Accordingly, we firmly declare the following:
The ban on education for girls and women in Afghanistan constitutes a crime against humanity and a clear manifestation of gender apartheid and must end immediately and unconditionally.
Education is an undeniable right of Afghan girls and women at every level, from primary education to higher education. There is no religious, cultural, or political justification for depriving them of this right.
The international community’s silence in the face of the educational exclusion of Afghan women amounts to complicity in their repression. International institutions must move beyond merely symbolic statements and take concrete and meaningful measures.
The exclusion of women from the education system is a deliberate attempt to exclude them from the social and political life of the country. An attempt that will ultimately be defeated by the resistance of Afghan women.
We reaffirm our full support for the courageous, conscious, and peaceful civil resistance of Afghan girls and women who, despite threats, repression, and deprivation, continue to fight for their right to education.
The Women’s Movement towards Freedom believes that Afghanistan’s future without free and equal access to education for women will be a dark and unstable future. We declare that the right to education is not negotiable, suspendable, or deniable, and that our struggle for this right will continue until freedom and equality are fully achieved.
Education is a right, not a privilege.
Afghanistan will not be free without educated and empowered women.
