Official Resolution of the “Women’s Movement towards Freedom” On the Occasion of March 8, International Women’s Solidarity Day

We, the members and leadership of the Women’s Movement towards Freedom, issue this resolution on the occasion of March 8, International Women’s Solidarity Day, at a time when Afghan women under Taliban rule are experiencing one of the darkest periods in the country’s contemporary history—a period in which women have been deprived of their rights to education, employment, political participation, and social engagement, while facing systematic discrimination and structural exclusion.
March 8, rooted in the historic struggles of women workers in the early twentieth century, is today not merely a symbolic day for Afghan women; it is a call for survival, justice, and freedom. We believe that women’s rights are human rights, and that no government or structure has the right to deprive women of these rights or make them conditional.
Accordingly, our teams in Afghanistan and Pakistan, through protests held on International Women’s Solidarity Day, declare the following specific and urgent demands:
Recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan as a grave violation of human rights, along with concrete action by the international community to hold those responsible accountable.
The implementation of targeted political, legal, and diplomatic pressure by the United Nations and international institutions to revoke all discriminatory decrees, policies, and restrictions imposed on women.
Guaranteeing women’s rights to employment, political participation, and social engagement at all levels of national and international decision-making concerning Afghanistan’s future.
Effective and direct support for protesting women, human rights defenders, and civil society activists who are facing threats, detention, and violence.
We call upon the international community, governments, human rights organizations, and women’s movements around the world not to abandon the struggle of Afghan women and to transform solidarity from words into concrete action.
The Women’s Movement towards Freedom emphasizes that Afghan women are not silent victims; they are conscious and resilient agents of change who continue to stand for their rights to education, employment, freedom, and human dignity. They will continue this struggle until justice is achieved.
Finally, we reaffirm our commitment to peaceful, civil, and nonviolent resistance grounded in universal human rights values and declare that the future of Afghanistan cannot be legitimate, sustainable, or just without the equal and meaningful participation of women.
