In the name of justice and human dignity,
We, the members and leadership of the Women's Movement towards Freedom, hereby issue this resolution on the occasion of March 8, International Women’s Day, at a time when the women of Afghanistan are enduring one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s contemporary history under the rule of the Taliban. During this period, women have been systematically deprived of their fundamental rights to education, employment, political participation, and social engagement, while facing institutionalized discrimination and structural exclusion.
March 8, rooted in the historic struggles of working women in the early twentieth century, represents today, for the women of Afghanistan, not merely a symbolic occasion, but a powerful call for survival, justice, dignity, and freedom. We firmly affirm that women’s rights are inseparable from universal human rights, and no authority or regime possesses the legitimacy to deny or condition these rights.
Accordingly, our teams in Afghanistan and Pakistan, through demonstrations organized in observance of International Women’s Day, present the following urgent and unequivocal demands:
The formal recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan as a grave violation of international human rights standards, accompanied by concrete and effective measures by the international community to ensure accountability for those responsible.
The implementation of targeted political, legal, and diplomatic pressure by the United Nations and relevant international institutions to abolish all discriminatory decrees, policies, and restrictions imposed against women and girls.
The full guarantee of women’s rights to employment, political participation, and social inclusion at all levels of national and international decision-making processes concerning the future of Afghanistan.
Meaningful and direct support for protesting women, human rights defenders, and civil society activists who continue to face threats, arbitrary detention, intimidation, and violence.
We call upon the international community, governments, human rights organizations, and women’s movements across the world not to abandon the women of Afghanistan. We urge them to transform expressions of solidarity into concrete and sustained action.
The Women's Movement towards Freedom, emphasizes that the women of Afghanistan are not silent victims; they are courageous, conscious, and resilient agents of change who continue to stand firmly for their rights to education, work, freedom, equality, and human dignity. Their struggle for justice will continue until these rights are fully realized.
In conclusion, we reaffirm our commitment to peaceful, civil, and human rights–based activism grounded in universal democratic values. We further declare that any future for Afghanistan that excludes the equal and meaningful participation of women can neither be legitimate nor sustainable.
